Tale of Tawaifs is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to bring forth the legacy of courtesans of India who were accomplished musicians and custodians of a rich heritage. Understanding the history and patronage of Tawaifs is critical as they share a common legacy with many communities who have since migrated and settled in the UK.

Audience feedback
“ Everyone should come and watch Kalakar’s musicals. Something to learn from each production.”
“ I have attended Kalakar’s musical before, didn’t want to miss it so travelled all the way with friends from London to Manchester to see Begum Akhtar.”
“ We were absolutely mesmerised by the way the whole show was presented. Umrao Jaan is a popular story but we didn’t know it could be presented live on stage so beautifully, that too with UK based artists.”
“ Looking forward to many many more of such productions. We are privileged to watch this. I could never imagine, this production was staged with UK based artists. The music, acting, dance, costume, stage decor- it’s just extraordinary. Chandra Chakraborty is superb.”
